Canning jars lined up in perfect rainbow rows look amazing on Instagram. But do you know what looks even better? Opening your freezer drawer on a Tuesday night, realising you can have homemade curry in 10 minutes flat, and not spending £200 on jars.
Why Freezer > Canning (in the UK)
• Cost: Jars, lids, energy bills… it adds up fast. Freezer bags and tubs? Pennies.
• Space: Let’s be honest — most UK kitchens don’t have shelves for 100 jars. But you probably have a freezer, even if it’s the bottom half of the fridge.
• Ease: Batch cooking a pot of chilli and freezing it in portions takes less time than faffing with sterilising jars and water baths.
Canning has its place (if you’re swimming in apples, chutney is fab). But for everyday family meals? The freezer wins.
Batch Base System (Your New Best Friend)
Instead of freezing whole meals, think in “bases.” Cook once, eat many ways.
1. Tomato Base → pasta sauce, pizza topping, chilli.
2. Curry Base → add chickpeas, chicken, lentils, paneer anything you want curried!
3. Soup/Stew Base → turn into minestrone, chicken soup, or lentil stew.
4. Bean/Lentil Base → toss into wraps, casseroles, bakes.
Cook a big pot, portion into tubs, label it (future you will thank you). I usually do this on a day I am using a base, make the big batch of base, take out my portion for the day and freeze the rest. I would have been cooking anyway, no time wasted!
The Filler Mix Trick
Want to make meat stretch further? Grate courgette, carrot, and potato. Freeze in bags. Add a handful to mince or stew — nobody notices, but you’ve halved the cost and added some nutrients.
What Else Freezes Like a Dream
• Flatbreads & wraps: pennies each, freeze stacked with greaseproof.
• Pancakes: batch 20 or more, freeze, reheat in toaster or air fryer.
• Stock: ice cube trays, ready to drop in.
• Herbs: chop, freeze in oil in ice cube trays.

The Bottom Line
If you want to homestead UK-style, your freezer is your secret weapon.
Batch it, freeze it, forget it… until that night when you’re knackered and Aldi is even whispering “takeaway pizza” at you.
Trust me: Freezer You is smug, organised, and way more chilled than Real-Time You.
